Cooking or looking?

Books about food and cooking are getting more and more popular. People like to read about interesting dishes and to look at nice, tasty pictures of preparing complicated dinners. The trend to Buy a New Kitchen is obvious as well. It might seem a bit strange as a lot of people prefer fastfood and shorten their time of preparing their dinners, because of lack of time. The point is that if there is a lack of time, there is no lack of interest.

Cooking books are inspiring for a graphic designer. The mix of colorful, delicate photos, maybe some cultural and historical background, and recipes combined with preparing conditions is a tempting challenge for most designers.

Is the book meant to be a beautiful thing among the art books, or a durable manual for the kitchen among bottles of olive oil and vinegar? Choice of paper, of binding and aftertreatment like laminate is an interesting and of course very important matter.
