PIRATE MAGAZINE and a World of Information Technology

To create a cover reflecting your idea about a new magazine is a project in the DP-course. The information technology rises a lot of great possibilities as well as a need of different mental and social structures. This overwhelming and global change inspired DP student Anna-Karin Ericsson to design the idea and cover of PIRATE, and here is her story:

–The idea here is a magazine covering any of the areas connected to copying and sharing of information, and the issue of anonymity and integrity in the age of information technology. From the philosophical to the technical, as well as the legislative aspects.

–Everyone who produces and/or consumes culture, as well as anyone who cares for a free society, should take an interest in the subject of this magazine. Still, the main buyer of a magazine like this would probably be mostly male ages about 20-40, who tend to have a stronger interest in technology and a personal relation to these issues. Because of this audience, I wanted the cover to look exciting, and somewhat strict and masculine. The image of the mask is a suitable symbol for the subject and hopefully implies/attracts an intellectual viewpoint. I admire the art and form of Dave McKean a lot, and this cover is ispired by his style. The format of the magazine is that of a comic book, smaller and more portable than an ordinary magazine.
